FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LINDSAY—Local MP Jamie Schmale, Deputy Shadow Minister for Natural Resources, today issued the following statement:

“For three years Canadians have watched Prime Minister Trudeau shut down pipeline after pipeline.

“Today, the Federal Court of Appeal ruled that the Liberal government failed to engage in meaningful dialogue and grapple with the real concerns of Indigenous communities, resulting in the suspension of the Trans Mountain Expansion for the foreseeable future.

“Prime Minister Trudeau’s failure to even carry out his own government’s consultation process is a serious indictment on the ability of his government to handle major projects in the national interest of Canadians.

“Thanks to the ineptitude of this Liberal government, Canadian taxpayers on the hook for a pipeline we can’t build.

“The ramifications of poorly considered policies like the nationalization of Trans Mountain, the oil tanker ban, the derailing of Energy East, cancellation of Northern Gateway and a job killing carbon tax is all too clear as investment flees south to the United States and other international jurisdictions.

“Canada’s Conservatives understand that First Nations consultation is a critical component of completing major projects in Canada and that the Trans Mountain pipeline is crucial to oil and gas workers across Canada and to the regional economies that stand to benefit from its expansion.

“By setting the conditions for success, low taxes and less redundant regulations, projects like Trans Mountain can be built without a burden to the taxpayer.

“We will continue to stand up for Canada’s resource sector, and most importantly, the men and women whose livelihoods depend on it.”
