FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 28, 2017
LINDSAY – Jamie Schmale, Member of Parliament for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock released the following statement regarding Federal Finance Minister Morneau’s recent announcement of his intention to eliminate certain tax measures that impact Canadian small business entrepreneurs.
“Conservatives believe taxes should be lower for Canadians: for businesses, families and individuals. This is the core of a Conservative vision to create prosperity and opportunity for everyone.
However, I am worried that the Liberal government’s proposed tax changes will discourage young entrepreneurs from opening their own businesses, negatively impact family farms, and make it even harder for Canadians to find a family doctor.
Of the 11.6 million Canadians employed in the private sector, 8.2 million are employed by small businesses. The Minister of Finance’s proposed changes punish law-abiding small business owners by sending more tax dollars to Ottawa. More taxes means less money for expanding businesses and creating jobs in their communities.
Conservatives believe in supporting farming families, not making life harder for them. With proposed restrictions on income splitting and narrowing of the lifetime capital gain exemptions for qualified farm property, family run farms could take a big hit on their savings and retirement plans.
Most doctors in Canada operate as small business owners – meaning they do not receive pensions or benefits afforded to employees in the private sector. The proposed new tax measures, which target the majority of Canada’s physicians, will impede their ability to invest in their practice and hire local workers; ultimately making it harder to justify continuing to practice in Canada.
The Liberal government has launched a 75-day public consultation process on their proposed changes, which closes on October 2nd.
Make sure your voice is heard, tell Finance Minister Bill Morneau how these changes will affect you. Email him at bill.morneau@parl.gc.ca and make sure to send me a copy at jamie.schmale@parl.gc.ca so that I can hold the government accountable on your behalf.
I will continue to support a tax system that is fair and equitable for all, that reduces the tax burden for law-abiding businesses, families and individuals, reduces government red tape, and supports entrepreneurs to create jobs in their communities.”
